📊 Thesis: Development of a Nationwide Building Database (100% remote)

Topic: Development of a comprehensive building database for heat demand analysis based on publicly available data (e.g. Census, 3D building data from federal states)

Your mission:
You will directly contribute to the advancement of our planning software by developing algorithms to build a comprehensive building database based on publicly available data sources (e.g. census data, 3D building models from federal states). You'll work extensively in Python, tackle challenges in the Big Data space, and – depending on your chosen focus – apply AI methods to enrich the data. Your knowledge of energy systems will support tasks like heat demand analysis and simplified building simulations.

Your tasks

  • Analyze and process publicly available datasets (e.g. Census, CityGML, OSM)
  • Enhance existing Python scripts for data collection, linking, and storage
  • Potential use of machine learning (AI) for data enrichment
  • Calculate simplified heat demands
  • Validate results using real-world districts

What you bring

  • Good to very good academic standing in energy engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field
  • Experience with Python – or strong willingness to learn
  • Independent and structured working style
  • Good German and English language skills
  • Interest in data analysis, energy planning, and digital infrastructure

What we offer you

  • 100% remote work – flexible and location-independent
  • Personal supervision by the founder (former research associate at RWTH Aachen)
  • Efficient completion: A clearly defined topic allows for focused work within a set timeframe
  • Monthly compensation (for full-time work, 40 hrs/week) + bonus upon successful completion (for master's theses)
  • A topic with real impact – your work will directly influence practice

Note: This thesis can be combined with a mandatory internship, if desired.

🔬 Thesis: Development of a Database for Typical Heat Demand Benchmarks (100% remote)

Topic: Analysis, harmonization, and development of a database of typical heat demand values for different building categories (e.g. schools, kindergartens, museums, sports halls)

Your mission:
Technical literature, standards (e.g. VDI, DIN), and energy reports contain a wealth of information on typical heat demand values for various building types – but this data is scattered, inconsistent, and difficult to compare. The goal of your thesis is to systematically analyze, structure, and convert this information into a standardized database. Your results will form an important foundation for automated heat load estimation in our planning software.

Your tasks

  • Review and evaluate pre-sorted technical sources, standards, and energy reports
  • Systematic categorization by building type
  • Develop a standardized data model for storing typical heat demand benchmarks
  • Build a searchable data structure (Python or Excel)
  • Document sources, uncertainties, and value ranges

What you bring

  • Solid academic background in energy engineering, civil engineering, architecture, environmental engineering, or similar
  • Careful and analytical working style
  • Good German and English language skills

What we offer you

  • 100% remote work – flexible and location-independent
  • Personal supervision by the founder (former research associate at RWTH Aachen)
  • Efficient processing: A clearly defined topic allows you to complete your thesis within an agreed timeframe
  • Monthly compensation (for full-time work, 40 hrs/week) + bonus upon successful completion (for master’s theses)
