📊 Thesis: Building a Library for Load and Temperature Profiles in Energy Systems (Düsseldorf and/or remote)
Topic: Development of a structured library for load, price, and temperature profiles and integration into energy system planning software
Your Mission:
When planning energy systems, time-resolved profiles are often required, for example for electricity prices, heat loads, cooling demands, or environmental temperatures. In practice, such data often has to be collected from different sources, processed, and integrated into simulation or planning models.
The goal of this thesis is to develop a structured library of typical load and temperature profiles for various applications and integrate it into the nPro software.
This includes, for example, electricity price profiles, temperature curves of rivers or wastewater, typical building load profiles, or industrial waste heat profiles. The developed profiles should be researched, documented, and made available within the software.
Your Tasks
- Research typical time series and profiles for energy systems from literature and open datasets
- Process and structure the data (e.g., load profiles, temperature curves, price profiles)
- Develop a clear and structured profile library
- Implement the data structure and functions in Python
- Integrate the profile library into the existing software
- Optional: Visualization and selection of profiles within the software
- Documentation of data sources, assumptions, and usage possibilities
Your Profile
- Studies in energy engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, industrial engineering, or a comparable field
- Interest in energy systems and data analysis
- Programming experience in Python is a plus
- Structured and independent way of working
What We Offer
- Up to 100% remote work
- Personal supervision by the founder (former research associate at RWTH Aachen University)
- Efficient completion: A clearly defined topic allows you to complete the thesis within an agreed timeframe
- Monthly compensation (for full-time work, 40 h/week) + bonus upon successful completion (for master’s theses)
- A topic with real impact – your work directly contributes to real-world applications
Note: The thesis can optionally be combined with a mandatory internship.

🌡️ Thesis: Hydraulic Design of District Heating Networks (Düsseldorf and/or remote)
Topic: Development and implementation of calculation modules for the hydraulic design of district heating networks: pump sizing and pressure maintenance systems
Your Mission:
Hydraulic design is a key component in the planning and operation of district heating networks.
In practice, aspects such as pressure losses, pressure maintenance systems, and pump sizing must be considered.
However, many planning tools only represent these aspects in a simplified way.
The goal of your thesis is to research existing calculation approaches from the technical literature (some literature is already available), derive suitable models for pump sizing and pressure maintenance systems, and integrate them into the nPro software.
Your Tasks
- Familiarization with the fundamentals of hydraulic design of district heating networks
- Literature research on calculation approaches for pressure maintenance and pump sizing
- Implementation of formulas and models in Python
- Integration of the calculation modules into the existing software
- Integration and visualization of pump curves
- Optional: Selection of real pump models from manufacturer data
- Testing and validation of the developed modules using an example district heating network
- Documentation of methods, assumptions, and results
Your Profile
- Studies in energy engineering, mechanical engineering, process engineering, industrial engineering, or a comparable field
- Interest in thermal energy systems and district heating networks
- Basic understanding of fluid mechanics or hydraulic systems is an advantage
- Programming experience in Python is a plus
What We Offer
- Up to 100% remote work
- Personal supervision by the founder (former research associate at RWTH Aachen University)
- Efficient completion: A clearly defined topic allows you to complete the thesis within an agreed timeframe
- Monthly compensation (for full-time work, 40 h/week) + bonus upon successful completion (for master’s theses)
- A topic with real impact – your work directly contributes to real-world applications
Note: The thesis can optionally be combined with a mandatory internship.
